life update

so I had been planning to write a post about my big new life adventure and how amazingly everything in my life was working out - until a hurricane came along and messed everything up, literally.

let's start with the good news, my new life adventure is super exciting (and no hurricane can trump my excitement!) I got a job in NYC (aka the love of my life) with VaynerMedia, doing communications/social media which is perfect for me. Couple that with the fact that my boyfriend also got a job offer in NYC, on the same day as me (unreal) and we shortly discovered that our offices would be 4 blocks away from each other. then throw in that we both found apartments in Hoboken with friends of ours 2 blocks away from each other (again, unreal.) Needless to say we both felt extremely lucky, yet at the same time in the back of my head, I thought this was all too good to be true, I guess my gut feeling was right!

last Thursday, I headed up to Newburgh to visit family, as my parents and I had had this trip planned for months, the timing just happened to work out nicely. so I drove up separately from them as my plan was to head to my friend Amanda and Jenn's apartment to crash with them for the week and start my shiny new job that following Monday! Plus, my plan was to head home Friday night, pack up a uhaul on Saturday with my boyfriend and move into our respective apartments on Sunday and be settled in our shiny new life.

sandy had other plans. on Sunday, the 28th, it was very apparent that Sandy was going to be bad, really bad. so Amanda & Jenn were heading to Amanda's house in Jersey to be safer from the storm, so I followed suit. Sunday turned into Monday, work was cancelled for all of us, we stayed in our PJ's all day, and lost power around 6 PM. work was cancelled for us all Tuesday as well. Tuesday evening I was told the safest & smartest thing to do was to push my start date back to this Monday 11/5, especially since the Vayner office didn't have power yet. so on Halloween, I made the drive home & am planning on driving back up to Jersey on Sunday (to continue my east coast tour as I have now dubbed it) to crash with Amanda and Jenn as planned, work for the week, drive back to VA Friday night, pack up the uhaul and return to Hoboken on Sunday, 11/11 to FINALLY move in.

Poor little Hoboken was hit hard, which is why my move in date was pushed back. Not to mention many other areas of Jersey as well as New York and Connecticut have so much more damage and loss and I know that I'm lucky that all of my friends up north are safe & sound.

It has definitely been a whirlwind this past month and I probably won't feel settled until maybe mid-December & I know it will be along time before NYC & Hoboken are back to normal, but you know what? That's what attracted me to NYC in the first place, the sense of community, seeing all these strangers coming together, having the attitude that things will be okay & just in general having an amazing sense of resiliency; that's the New York (and NJ way) and I certainly cannot wait to be a part of it.
